Effect of debris accumulation on scour evolution at bridge pier in bank proximity

چکیده
Abstract Large debris transported by flood affects scour features at bridge piers and increases the risks of structural failure. Geometric characteristics relative position pier with respect to river bank are important parameters for process. The interaction between water flow accumulation shear stress, turbulence consequently enhances depth pier. This paper aims analyzing such effects on evolution piers. To this end, two series tests were carried out under clear condition different geometries percentage blockage ratios. Experimental evidences showed that only influences equilibrium morphology low depths. Conversely, its effect becomes negligible higher Useful practical relationships have been derived, satisfactory prediction capability all tested configurations.

Predicting Bridge Pier Scour Depth with SVM
Prediction of maximum local scour is necessary for the safety and economical design of the bridges. A number of equations have been developed over the years to predict local scour depth using laboratory data and a few pier equations have also been proposed using field data. Most of these equations are empirical in nature as indicated by the past publications. In this paper attempts have been ma...
متن کاملPrediction of Bridge Pier Scour Using Genetic Programming
This paper presents the use of genetic programming (GP) as a tool to predict pier scour depths based on clear-water conditions of laboratory measurements by past researchers. Four main dimensionless parameterspier width, approaching flow depth, threshold flow velocity, and channel open-ratio are considered for predicting the scour depth. The performance of the GP equation is verified by compa...
متن کاملExperimental comparison of sacrificial piles and submerged vanes as scour countermeasures around bridge pier
An experimental study has been conducted on the effectiveness of two types of flow-altering countermeasures placed around a cylindrical pier under clear water condition, which include sacrificial piles and submerged vanes. Their arrangements follow the optimal configurations recommended in the published articles with some modification. The temporal evolution of maximum scour depth and its equil...
متن کاملDebris Accumulation at Bridge Crossings: Laboratory and Field Studies
Extensive accumulation of large woody debris at bridge piers poses a chronic and sometimes quite severe problem at several bridge crossings in Indiana. This study, involving both laboratory and field components, examines the factors contributing to the initiation and development of such debris piles. The laboratory study, performed in a rectangular channel with a single model pier (and in some ...
